Thursday Evening: “Pilsner, Porter, Polysaccharides and pH: The Classy Chemistry of Beer” with Dr. Charles Bamforth (Reception and Presentation)

 

Friday Evening: Western Region Awards Banquet with an after dinner talk by Priestly Medalist Dr. Richard Zare: “Why Shaken and Not Stirred.”  Presentation of the WR CHED Chemistry Teacher of the Year, the WR Ann Nalley Award for Volunteer Service, and the WR Stan Israel Award for Advancing Diversity in the Chemical Sciences.

 

Saturday Evening: “Food Mysteries” with Shirley Corriher and Sara Risch (Reception and Presentation)

Thursday:

ACS Office of Public Affairs will participate in a discussion on STEM education and National and California State legislative policies.

 

Friday:

District VI Director Dr. Bonnie Charpentier and attending members of the ACS Board of Directors will host a luncheon and ACS Strategy Café to provide an opportunity for dialogue with the membership.  Lunch will be provided.  Sign up in registration.

 

Saturday:

The California Section Women Chemists Committee hosts a luncheon featuring ACS President Dr. Marinda Wu.  Sign up in registration.

 

Workshops:

Thursday:

“Laboratory Waste Management 2013” by Chemical Health and Safety Division.

 

Two half-day courses titled “Strategic Planning” and “Collaborating Across Boundaries.” by The ACS Center for Leadership Development.

 

Friday:

“Advanced Approaches for Small Molecule Polymorph and Salt Selection: Screening, Preparation and Characterization” in collaboration with the Pharmaceutical and BioScience Society (CACO-PBSS).

 

“How to be a More Effective Chemical Hygiene Officer (CA Version)” by the Chemical Health and Safety Division.  The NRCC - CHO Certification exam will be offered on Saturday.

 

“Finding Your Pathway” by the ACS Office of Career Management and Development will be given twice for both students and mid-career professionals.  Resume reviews by an ACS Career Consultant will also be available.

 

Student Programming

Friday:

9:00-11:00 AM: Career Networking session and reception sponsored by ACS Corporation Associates.

 

Saturday: 

Poster Session for undergraduate students.

Sessions for international students and students interested in studying abroad sponsored by the International Affairs Committee

 

 

Public Outreach

Saturday 2:00-4:00 PM:  Special poster session on the Chemistry of the Elements for middle and high school students.  Students are encouraged to present posters on the chemistry and societal impact of the chemical elements important in the formation and life of the Western Region. 

 

Saturday: “Teach the Teachers” workshop at Mission College for middle school teachers focused on the 2013 NCW theme of energy.
