Western Regional Meeting Awards

Award Descriptions

The following ACS Regional Awards will be presented at the closing banquet on the evening of Saturday, October 27th at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, CA.

E. Ann Nalley Western Region Award for Volunteer Service

This award recognizes the volunteer efforts of ACS members in the region who have served the ACS, contributing significantly to the goals and objectives of the Society at the national, regional, or local level through their activities. The award consists of a plaque and travel expenses to attend the 2018 Western Regional Meeting in Pasadena, California on October 27, 2018.

Eligibility: An ACS member in the Western Region who has an outstanding record of service to the region through activities at the local, regional or national level is eligible. The volunteerism may include a variety of activities, including sponsorship of a singular endeavor or exemplary leadership in the region. Past and present members of the ACS Board of Directors, ACS staff, and members of the Western Region Awards Committee are ineligible.

Nomination Process: Two letters documenting the outstanding service of a nominee, describing the activities and timeframe of the volunteer service are sufficient. Letters of application should be submitted to the Western Region Awards Chair: Lee Latimer (lhlatimer@mindspring.com) by August 1, 2018.

Stanley Israel Western Region Award for Advancing Diversity in the Chemical Sciences

This award, sponsored by the ACS Committee on Minority Affairs, is presented to individuals or organizations that have advanced diversity in the chemical sciences and significantly stimulated or fostered activities that promote inclusiveness within the region. The award consists of a medal and a $1,000 grant to support and further the activities for which the award was made. It also includes funding to cover the recipient's travel expenses to the 2018 Western Regional Meeting in Pasadena, CA on October 27, 2018.

Eligibility: Nominees may come from academia, industry, government, or independent entities, and may also be organizations, including AS Local Sections and Divisions. The nominee must have created and fostered ongoing programs or activities that result in increased numbers of persons from diverse and underrepresented minority groups, persons with disabilities, or women who participate in the chemical enterprise.

Nomination Process: The nomination package must include: a letter of nomination; a CV or resume containing relevant diversity promotion activities and factual data on outcomes; at least one, but no more than three supportive letters, one of which must come from the nominee's ACS Local Section. The mailing address, phone number, and email address of nominees and supporters must be provided. Partners for Progress and Prosperity (P3) Western Region Award

Purpose: This award is to encourage and recognize successful and exemplary partnerships. These partnerships can be between industry, academia, government, small business and/or other organizations, including ACS local sections with other organizations which result in impactful outcomes in one of the following categories:

The award consists of a special medal and certificate of recognition; a cash award to be split equally between the partners is to further support the activities being recognized.

Eligibility: A nominee may represent academia, industry, government, small business or other organizations such as a local section.

Application: Send a letter of nomination describing the partnership, its activities, outcomes and impact; at least one (but no more than three) supporting letters; and contact information (mailing address, phone, and email addresses) for nominee and supporters. Send the nomination package to the Western Region P3 Award Coordinator: Eileen diMauro by September 15, 2018.

ACS Division of Chemical Education Western Region Award for Excellence in High School Teaching

This award recognizes, encourages, and aims to stimulate outstanding teachers of high school chemistry. Nominees should be actively engaged in the teaching of chemistry or a chemical science (grades 9-12) on at least a half-time basis. The award is sponsored by the Division of Chemical Education (DivCHED). The recognition consists of a cash award, a plaque, and reasonable travel expenses to the 2018 Western Regional Meeting in Pasadena, CA on October 27, 2018.

Eligibility: Any individual, except a member of the WR award committee or currently enrolled student of the nominee, may submit one nomination. The nominee must be actively engaged in the teaching of chemistry or a chemical science in grades 9-12 on at least a half-time basis. The nomination should demonstrate as many of the following attributes of the nominee as possible: quality of teaching, ability to challenge and inspire students, extracurricular work in chemistry (e.g., science fairs, clubs, and activities that stimulate the interest of young people in chemistry and related sciences); professional development (attendance at scientific meetings, membership in professional organizations, and other means of self-improvement); leadership within the profession.
